Complying with the 珍妮Clery Act

The 珍妮Clery Disclosure of Campus 安全策略 and Campus 犯罪统计数据 Act is the landmark federal law, originally known as the 校园安全 Act, that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime (murder, 抢劫, 纵火, forcible and non-forcible sex offenses) on and around their 校园es.

Because the law is tied to participation in federal student financial aid programs it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private. 它是由美国执行的.S. 教育部.

The "Clery Act" is named in memory of 19 year old Lehigh University freshman Jeanne Ann Clery (pictured left) who was raped and murdered while asleep in her residence hall room on April 5, 1986.

珍妮的父母, 康妮和霍华德, discovered that students hadn't been told about 38 violent crimes on the Lehigh 校园 in the three years before her murder. They joined with other 校园 crime victims and persuaded Congress to enact this law, which was originally known as the "Crime Awareness and 校园安全 Act of 1990."

The law was amended in 1992 to add a requirement that schools afford the victims of 校园 sexual assault certain basic rights, and was amended again in 1998 to expand the reporting requirements. The 1998 amendments also formally named the law in memory of 珍妮Clery.

Subsequent amendments in 2000 and 2008 added provisions dealing with registered sex offender notification and 校园 emergency response, 分别. The 2008 amendments also added a provision to protect crime victims, “告密者”, 还有其他的报复. The 2013 Campus SaVE (Sexual Violence Elimination Act) and VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) codifies certain aspects and adds Domestic and Dating Violence and Stalking.
